BUDGET SEASON IS HERE!!
While there is no regularly scheduled County Commission meeting this month, there are plenty of budget meetings that have been held during the month of April, including:
|
- SCHOOLS - Based on the latest draft of the proposed WCS budget, here are some of the items under consideration:
- An additional $50 million dollars for operating expenses to cover pay increases and additional staff.
- Over the past two budget cycles, WCS has requested almost a $100 million increase in their budget, despite enrollment numbers staying fairly flat and teachers still not being paid as much as their counterparts in Davidson and Rutherford County.
- PUBLIC SAFETY
- There is a cost increase to EMS services provided by Williamson Health. To cover these increased expenses, Williamson Health is requesting an additional $2,000,000.
- The Sheriff's Office is now requesting additional deputies to cover the needs of the county.
- ALL COUNTY BUDGETS
- Based on the county mayor's recommendation, all county departments have been directed to give employees a 7% raise.
- Arrington Special Area Plan Advisory Board met for the second time with the public on Wednesday, March 27th at Arrington Elementary School. You can learn more about the upcoming meetings at the county website. You can read more about the last meeting in this article by the Williamson Herald.
- As the county continues to consider how to address the issue with our current jail, several members of the Commission along with Sheriff Hughes are taking time to visit newly built jails in the area starting with Lewis County and Davidson County. The idea is to understand where cost savings may exist to reduce the current project estimate of $188.8 million.
- This past month, the Property Committee met at the Primus Building on Carothers to evaluate if buying an existing structure versus building new may be a better option for the growing needs for our county. With commercial real estate being available for approximately half the cost of building new, there could be a huge cost savings to our taxpayers.
- There have been several emails received in the past couple months regarding response times for emergency services. We are always looking for ways to improve this service but if you ever have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out.
- SEPTIC PERMITS: If you or someone you know has run into any issues obtaining a septic permit, please reach out to me via email to let me know the situation. I have been working with several property owners to help resolve their issues and am always here to help.
- SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES: If you or someone you know might be interested in joining one of our County Committees or Boards, please fill out the nominee form and email to me.
